| Our goal is to identify and validate novel molecular drug targets for the phenotyping and treatment of obesity. The key to reinforcing competitiveness is to identify important targets that can be rapidly developed by the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries, thereby reducing the “lead time” between fundamental knowledge and practical exploitation, and making efficient use of the resources invested in this vitally important research area at the European level. We will begin by investigating the most likely known molecular drug targets for diabesity, and extend these to include new targets identified by our Consortium. The added value of carrying out this research at the European level is that collectively, as a united taskforce of internationally distinguished diabesity researchers, we can achieve more as a Consortium than would be possible if we worked independently. These gains in effectiveness will come through facilitated access to technology and expertise, combined with a collective commitment to collaboration, and a common investment in the overall success of the project. This pooling of intellectual and technical resources will speed the discovery process through synergistic interactions at the laboratory bench. Our strong management structure facilitates integration, exchange of ideas, information, resources, technological advances and will promote Europe to the forefront of Diabesity research. |
